Equal Pay for Equal Work
Petition
WHEREAS hundreds of thousands of Ontarians work at part-time, temporary, seasonal, "temp agency" and other precarious jobs;
AND WHEREAS many of these workers are paid less, receive fewer benefits, and have inferior working conditions compared to full-time employees doing the same job for the same employer;
AND WHEREAS this is discriminatory;
AND WHEREAS Article 23 (2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work";
AND WHEREAS, in 1948, Canada was among the first countries to ratify the Declaration;
AND WHEREAS, following the principle of non-discrimination, many countries have passed laws that prohibit discrimination based on job status;
AND WHEREAS, in keeping with Premier McGuinty's stated goal of reducing poverty in Ontario, similar laws in this province could improve living standards and the quality of life for countless Ontario workers and their families;
THEREFORE we the undersigned call on the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to introduce, debate, and pass legislation to prohibit discrimination against any worker on the basis of his or her status as a part-time, temporary, seasonal, "temp agency" or other type of employee.
